Just outside of Pemberton is the “Gloucester Tree”, one of three “climbing trees” in this district. When I first read about this I was astounded that they exist and are open to the public… and when I saw them in real-life I was even more perplexed. These trees were impaled with steel reo-bars to create rungs that allow “you” to climb to the upper canopy about 65m above, with no supervision, no safety equipment and no safety net of any kind…
We said “no, this is not for us”, took a walk around the bush nearby and left…
… but the seed was planted, and the following day I did feel impelled to climb the nearby Dave Evans Bicentennial Tree!
I only climbed to the first platform, about 35m up this giant and do in some ways wish that I had gone to the top – but this was still a thrilling experience that I don’t think I will ever do again.
